Day 40: Figan Steals his Dossier from our Office (!)
| Date: | August 8, 1974 |

Curt’s Report. Figan was found feeding in a nearby ngazi tree at 0640. After 1 ½ hours of ngazi and mtobogoro feeding, Figan and Faben traveled to Camp where they met Satan. Figan displayed at Satan who avoided. Figan then walked into our office in Pan Palace and walked out with the BARF (Behavior, Associations, and Ranging of Figan) study analysis folder. David Riss rushed over and threatened Figan who put hair-out, dropped the folder, and charged briefly. This stealing of his own folder was the most obvious sign of Figan’s intelligence observed over the 50-day follow. Figan obviously intended to blackmail us after he had stolen the valuable information.
Figan displayed once alone and once with Faben before they left Camp to the west and traveled to the main trail where they fed on ngazi for an hour. At 1012 Faben descended the ngazi tree and traveled uphill. Figan followed, but apparently didn’t see where Faben had gone as he traveled off in a tangent direction. Figan returned to the ngazi trees and pant-hooted. Faben drummed on Juliet’s house 70 m away. Figan traveled in that direction, however Faben was never found. Figan spent the rest of the day alone in Lower Kasakela feeding on ngazi, kitota, mumanda, and msiloti before nesting with Patti in AK1 at 1755.

Anne Pusey watches Figan charge bipedal at the drum. On Day 40 Figan strolled into an open Pan Palace (green door, right) and into our office (behind where Anne is sitting). ![]()
ASR Details. No major ASR outside of Faben and Figan displaying into Camp.
Nesting Details. Figan had been feeding with Patti on kitota in Lower Kasakela when at 1748 he traveled 50 meters and built his nest 5 m up in a tree directly above the AK1-Kasakela junction. Initially Figan went into an old nest without refurbishing it. Three minutes later he got out of his nest and broke off branches up higher and put them in his nest. Two minutes later he did this again. Patti was feeding 30 m away when we left them.
