Day 32: Travel to the Rutanga Stream

Date:July 31, 1974
Start:06:59 (nest)
Finish:18:57 (nest)
Duration:11 hr. 58 min.
Observers:Curt Busse and Cretus Chiwaga

Curt’s Report. After displaying at unidentified chimps (perhaps Harmony and Beethoven) upon un-nesting, Figan left the large group and traveled to the mumanda tree near the Kasakela stream where he met Faben, Goblin, Melissa, Athena, Atlas, and later Patti. The group fed quietly for an hour then at 0809 Figan badly attacked Patti. Patti screamed intensely for over a minute before Figan reassured her with an inspection. Figan then led travel to an mnazi tree near the mumanda tree where the other chimps were still feeding. At 0848 Figan moved to the ground and groomed for an hour with Faben and Satan. Nope, Mustard, Satan, Patti, and Fifi joined the grooming group. Figan, Faben, Satan, Goblin, Fifi, and Patti then moved down to the Kasakela fishing village for some matete. This was the first time that Patti has been observed on the beach.

Faben strides bipedal along Peak Ridge.

The group traveled along the beach all the way down to the Linda stream. They stopped frequently to go in [empty] fishing huts and feed on soot. There was over half hour of soot feeding in one fishing hut at the Linda stream (photo, below).

Patti emerges from a fishing hut near the Linda stream.

As the group traveled into Lower Linda, Figan found a bee-hive and shook it briefly before moving on. The chimps then traveled up the big hill towards the Linda-Rutanga ridge and stopped to rest for an hour. Freud and Goblin played constantly.

At 1328 the chimps suddenly became very excited and leapt up from the ground. Figan hair-out held his balls then rushed downhill 20 m. Goblin approached submissively to Figan. Colobus vocalizations were heard downhill; the chimps sat and listened for 20 minutes; then Faben initiated travel to the lower Rutanga-Linda ridge. There were three sets of vocal displays by Figan and Faben as along with Satan, Goblin, Fifi, and Patti they descended into Lower Rutanga valley. They traveled down to the stream and fed briefly on majani before returning to the Linda-Rutanga ridge for mnazi (see Stranger Contact).

Faben rests along the Linda-Rutanga ridge.

Patti lost the group down at the Rutanga stream and screamed several times before relocating the chimps in the mnazi tree. The group scattered upon return through Lower Linda, but they regrouped during travel to Kasakela. I thought perhaps that there had been a colobus troop off in the distance in Lower Linda but there was no positive identification.

When the group arrived at the mumanda tree where Miff, Sherry, and Jomeo were feeding, Figan and Faben both did long branching displays. Faben charged past Fifi, grabbed her leg, and dragged her briefly as she screamed. Moments later Faben attacked Miff. Figan charged ahead and many screams were heard as he displayed near Jomeo and Sherry. Half hour of mumanda feeding preceded nesting. Nope and Mustard arrived as Figan built his nest.

Goblin rests along the Linda-Rutanga ridge.

ASR Details. At 0810 Figan was feeding in a mumanda tree with Faben, Melissa, Athena, Atlas, and Patti when Patti approached and pant-grunted to Figan. Figan then spontaneously attacked Patti who screamed and avoided. Figan descended to the ground and continued to display, branch-waving and going bipedal. Patti continued to scream as she approached Figan full-open-grin, fear dung, and presented. Patti screamed, whimpered and presented again to Figan who continued to show no response. Patti arm-extended, close-faced, squeaked, whimpered, full-closed-grin, and presented to Figan who left her and traveled hair-out uphill. Patti whimpered and squeaked full-closed-grin then approached Figan again full-closed-grin, squeak, present and scream. Figan finally reassured her with an inspection; Patti settled down and briefly groomed Figan. There was no obvious reason why Figan attacked Patti.

Two minutes later Figan went into a nearby tree, broke off some branches, and carried them in his mouth up to an old nest 5 m off the ground. This old nest probably wasn’t his. There were many pant-hoots by the group during the next few minutes. Nope and Mustard arrived at 1859. Figan was nested 20 m from Faben and even farther from most of the others. Patti, Fifi, and Goblin were still feeding when we left.

Fifi rests along the Linda-Rutanga ridge on DAY 32.

At 1752, after returning from Rutanga with Satan, Goblin, Fifi and Patti, Figan and Faben did long arrival displays near a Kasakela mumanda tree where Miff, Sherry, and Jomeo were feeding. Figan charged way ahead branch-waving (bad observation) though screams were heard, perhaps from Miff. Faben displayed behind Figan, and as Faben charged past Fifi who made no attempt to avoid, he grabbed his sister’s leg and dragged her briefly. Fifi screamed and Faben continued to charge ahead towards Miff. Miff screamed and crouched as Faben attacked her, stamping on her back several times, then charging off again. Figan charged way ahead and screams were heard from Sherry and Jomeo (bad observation). Miff later squeaked and screamed as she presented to Faben…

Nesting Details. Figan was feeding at the mumanda tree in the korongo north of Kasakela with Faben, Satan, Sherry, Jomeo, Goblin, Miff, Moeza, Fifi, and Patti and he exchanged grunts with Faben at 1823. Eight minutes later Faben went in an adjacent tree and nest-built. Faben rapid-grunted from his nest at 1858 and Figan grunted in response. Many of the others had nested when Figan descended to the ground at 1853; there were many group pant-hoots. Figan sat on the ground and rapid-grunted at 1855.
