Day 13: Jomeo/Sherry Reunion

Date:July 12, 1974
Start:07:00 (nest)
Finish:18:45 (nest)
Duration:11 hr. 45 min.
Observers:Curt Busse and Hamisi Matama

Curt’s Report. This large group un-nested quietly and traveled uphill to the mnazi trees where two rounds of pant-hoots preceded feeding. Msongati feeding followed and the large group then traveled to Jane’s house for breakfast (mumanda). During travel Faben displayed at and hit Goblin. Atlas beat up Moeza, who was then reassured by Freud.

Figan led travel to Camp where Humphrey, Satan, Sherry, Pallas, Harmony, and Beethoven (unhabituated mother-infant) were nearby. Humphrey and Sherry both avoided two sets of displays by Figan and Faben. Satan, Pallas, Harmony, and Beethoven (who is quite independent of Harmony) were uphill 15 m out of Camp and made no response to the displays. A long grooming bout followed in which Humphrey and Figan groomed for an hour (photo, above). At 1031, Beethoven screamed during play with Goblin. Many group screams and waah’s ensued and Figan displayed into Camp.

The group traveled to KK9 where there were pant-hoot-drum displays by Figan and Faben. Figan moved away from the group to feed on ngazi. Figan, Faben, Gigi, Miff, Moeza, and Sherry traveled to KK8 for mshai. During feeding Faben displayed and briefly attacked Miff. The group moved to KK7 for more mshai. And there was an unexpected reunion by Jomeo and Sherry. Sherry suddenly appeared without warning; Sherry and Jomeo both put hair-out upon seeing each other. Sherry hoo’ed, then rushed, hair-out, hunch, full-open-grin to Jomeo for a mutual embrace. Jomeo arm- extended to Sherry and they mutually groomed. The group then traveled quickly through Upper Kasakela to LK4 for mshai, magugunwa, and kishurushuru. Goblin and Jomeo (and perhaps Faben) copulated with Gigi (Goblin twice).

Sherry and Jomeo rest in camp.

Figan temporarily lost the group during travel to the Upper Linda stream (quite high). He pant-hoot-drum displayed once, perhaps trying to locate the others. Minutes later he rejoined the group while feeding on kitota. Figan, Faben, Gigi, Goblin, Sherry, and Jomeo traveled in Upper Linda (very high) feeding for a long time on mshai before descending down to LK7 for budyankende. Jomeo nested at 1752 up in the mshai fields. Faben then Gigi nested at the LK7 streambed at 1828. Sherry nested nearby a little later. Figan continued to feed on budyankende near the nests, and we left as he and Goblin continued to feed at 1845. As Hamisi and I returned we saw a colobus troop only about 100 m from the chimps.

ASR Details. Figan displayed in Camp three times when a large group was present. One display was directed at Humphrey and another was directed at Humphrey and Sherry (Faben displaying also). Later in the day Faben briefly attacked Miff. There was a great reunion between Sherry and Jomeo (see summary of follows).

Nesting Details. The group left Jomeo who had nested at 1750 and traveled down into LK7. After brief budyankende feeding, Faben built his nest 10 m up in a tall tree over the LK7 streambed. Soon afterwards at 1828 Gigi built her nest in the same tree 7 m from Figan. Figan traveled to the other side of the korongo and continued feeding. Sherry nested uphill. At 1845 Figan and Faben exchanged rapid-grunts as Figan fed 30 m away from Faben. We left Figan as he and Goblin continued to feed. Next morning Figan and Goblin were seen having both nested near Gigi and Faben.
