David’s Report. Figan awoke and started feeding with Patti and Jomeo on mnazi leaves. Sherry and Melissa were nearby, but never did interact at all with Figan, and were at least 100 m away. Jomeo, Figan, and Patti split off and started eating msongati, and then at 0825 Patti followed Figan to Jane’s house to eat the fig-like mumanda. Figan then traveled to the beach for vines as Patti remained on the edge of the cliff. Patti followed Figan behind the Mess to a tree on the stream where he fed on muguiza (same tree as on Day 6). They left the tree soon after and headed for Camp where Figan did an impressive arrival display, causing Satan and Mike (grooming together) to avoid.

All the males started to groom when at 1025 it started to rain. While Mike and Satan continued to groom in the tree, Figan sat for 35 minutes, looking rather unhappy. He left Camp to the east with Patti and Satan, but ignoring constant pant-hoots from the east that had started at 1107. He went to the south to feed with Stumptail the baboon for an hour and 20 minutes. Many pant-hoots from the northeast in the KK8 area.

He returned to Camp to find Mike still there and they groomed. Gilka later arrived and Figan and Gilka, finally at 1409, left Mike and Camp and traveled to the east. They soon met up with Humphrey, Satan, Faben, Goblin, Athena, Atlas, Passion, Pallas, Sparrow, Gilka, and Patti all feeding in one tree. Figan did four arrival displays (see major ASSRs). The group broke up soon as Figan, Atlas, Gigi, Patti, Goblin, Faben, and Sherry headed up slope to eat mshai. Atlas soon left and this group stayed together until nesting, with Sherry leaving at 1900. The group moved down Upper Kasakela to the kifumbe trees southeast of Linda Peak. They did not come down from the trees until 1930 and moved into Linda to nest slowly. Figan was heard in the dark to construct a nest about 1945.
ASSR Details. A funny day as Figan entered Camp, surprising grooming Mike and Satan. He did an impressive arrival display, chasing Mike briefly. They groomed and Satan, who had avoided, approached and groomed also. It rained and Figan sat in Camp. A series a pant-hoots and screams began to the east and lasted for the next 3 hours as Figan left Camp and fed on ngazi, ignoring the many pant-hoots from the northeast (KK8) area. He returned to Camp and groomed with Mike again and displayed once, prompting more screams and pant-hoots from the northeast.

He finally left with Gilka, and arrived displaying into a tree which contained Humphrey, Satan, Faben, Goblin, Athena, Atlas, Passion, Pallas, Sparrow, Gigi, and Patti. Figan did four displays in the next 5 minutes. All scattered in his branching arrival, in which he ended up in the tree with the others. Passion approached and pant-grunt- presented. This prompted Figan to display again, and ended chasing Gigi a short way and into another tree where he branched extensively. Faben also displayed.

Figan sat for a minute on the ground and charged and chased a screaming Humphrey. Humphrey avoids and screams for a minute as Figan catches his breath. Figan then starts another branching ngazi tree display and swings from frond to frond. He accidentally kicks Faben out of the tree and Faben falls a short distance and screams a short time. No reassurance from Figan. Things calm down as the group breaks up with slow deliberate movement. All sat for 15 minutes as Figan finishes his displays.
Nesting Details. The group – Gigi, Goblin, Patti, Figan, and Faben – ate kifumbe at Linda Peak until 1935 and then started down into a Linda korongo slowly in the dark. They traveled for about 12 m before the first nests were made. I could not see Figan make his nest, but it was near the others.
