Fifty Days in the Life of Figan

June 30 – August 18, 1974

Day 8: Figan and Faben Alone All Day

Date:July 7, 1974
Start:07:10
Finish:19:25 (nest)
Duration:12 hr. 15 min.
Observers:David Riss and Ann Pierce

David’s Report. Figan was located on the Linda trail southeast of Linda Peak eating kifumbe. A fresh nest was within 30 m and Faben was still in his nest. He had pant- hooted twice within 10 minutes. Figan and Faben spent most of the day feeding together, traveling to southern Linda slopes to feed on msongati and mkuyu together, and then salt-searched in an empty Linda fishing village. They displayed and pant-hooted into every tree in which they arrived, but did not get any responses. Figan seemed to split from Faben at 1745 in Kasakela as he continued to eat while Faben patiently waited below. Figan traveled to the tree near Jane’s house and then up to Camp silently, avoiding trails. He arrived at Camp at 1900 and investigated banana boxes and then nested nearby.

Faben self-grooming in Upper Linda Valley.

ASSR Details. Figan and Faben traveled together all day alone and would announce their presence by drumming and pant-hooting displays into each new tree in each new valley; they got no responses in Kasakela, northern Kasakela korongos, or Linda. Figan was silent upon his return in the early evening to Kakombe; perhaps wanted to take those about in surprise the next morning?

Faben pant-hoots and charges bipedal at the buttress of the drumming tree along the path near Plum Tree Thicket.

Nesting Details. Figan was found at 0710 after a series of pant-hoots southeast of Linda Peak. There was a nest within 30 m and he was feeding. Faben un-nested nearby within 100 m at 0724 and came to Figan’s tree.

That night, Figan was alone at Jane’s house at 1830 and could have nested nearby like on Day 6, but he chose to go to Camp (not on trails and silently: no displays). He entered Camp and investigated the banana boxes and stayed until 1919, nineteen minutes. He then headed out of Camp in the direction in which he entered and made a nest near one of the small minorports (sic) in KK10. Nothing unusual about the nest except the hour at 1925.
