Day 6: Streambed Display and Hunting
| Date: | July 5, 1974 |
| Start: | 07:02 (nest) |
| Finish: | 19:10 (nest) |
| Duration: | 12 hr. 8 min. |
| Observers: | Curt Busse, David Riss, and Cretus Chiwaga |
Curt’s Report. The chimps were up at 0702 and they traveled back to Kasakela. Figan did a silent display at the Kasakela stream and he continued towards Kakombe. Jomeo and Goblin were feeding in the mnazi patch and Figan did a long silent display under these trees. His display included the destruction of a fresh nest which presumably had been Jomeo’s from the night before. Surprisingly, Sherry never showed up to greet his brother.
Figan, Patti, Goblin, and Jomeo fed on msongati for an hour and then traveled towards Camp. Figan fed on ngazi near camp; Jomeo displayed on the House of Haki and went to Camp. Figan fed for 1/2 hour, then displayed through Camp and was followed by Jomeo to the Dell. Jomeo initiated displays near the stream, and Figan then did a two minute streambed display. There had been several pant-hoots from KK4 and Figan and Jomeo seemed to be trying to find these chimps. There were several displays and pant-hoots by Figan and Jomeo as they traveled towards KK4. At 1030 they stopped and groomed for an hour before I left and Riss continued the follow. (David takes over the follow here).
David’s Report. This is a continuation of Busse’s July 5th follow, starting with Jomeo and Figan alone in KK3 near the stream. They had been mutually grooming for quite a while when Jomeo and then Figan led travel to the southeast near KK4. Figan then climbed a tree and sat overlooking the valley for 30 minutes. After a Jomeo grooming Figan bout of 20 minutes, Figan led travel up the KK4-KK3 slope, feeding on budyankende and briefly chasing a colobus troop (see Predation Report).
Figan and then Jomeo arrived together displaying at Hilltop Wood where they just sat. Figan led them back into KK4-KK5, with Jomeo feeding at length, not close by. Jomeo did come back to Figan as Figan hunted in KK5 for 20 minutes the same colobus troop without success. Figan soon returned to budyankende and did not see Jomeo again.

He traveled to Camp, displaying twice on drumming trees on the way. He passed through Camp and headed to an ngazi tree that he had fed on earlier in the morning. He then ate mkuyu, mshai, muguiza, msongati, and mumanda before nesting alone. He traveled to the stream and then Jane’s house. He made one nest at 1828, but fell out and then traveled to the figs at Jane’s and then made another one. He moved after we left or during the night as he was not found in his nest the next morning; he was with Gilka and Jomeo in lower, western Kasakela near AK1.
ASR Details, Curt: After un-nesting, Figan traveled 200 m to the mnazi trees where Jomeo and Goblin were feeding. Figan did a long branching display under the mnazi tree and then proceeded to rip up a fresh nest which perhaps had been Jomeo’s from the preceding day. Later in the day Figan and Jomeo passed through Camp and displayed together several times as they searched for other chimps in KK3 and KK4. Figan did a brief streambed display for perhaps two minutes during travel to KK3. Jomeo merely watched.
ASR Details, David: None, except a few Hilltop Wood arrival displays with Jomeo present and a few drumming alone displays coming to Camp from the waterfall.
Nesting Details. Figan made a nest approximately 200 m from his last msongati tree at 1828. He had folded about three branches over when, while working on the fourth, fell back in the tree a ways and fell about 5m in the tree. He gave up and traveled a korongo in lower Kakombe to Jane’s house where he ate figs. At 1900 he stopped and traveled up the korongo slowly, looking for trees. He saw one and grunted and climbed up and made a nest. We waited for 5 minutes and left. During the night, pant-hoots were heard from that direction and Figan was not in his nest at 0615 the next morning. He was found at 0730 with Gilka and Jomeo at a popular Kasakela feeding area nearby.
