Figan, Faben, Sherry, Gigi, and Goblin stumbled upon a colobus troop during travel into Upper Kasakela. After a 15 minute hunt, Figan caught a medium sized ”albino” monkey. Jomeo, Nope, and Mustard arrived soon afterwards. Figan relinquished the carcass several minutes later, and Faben attacked Gigi and Sherry during the scramble for the carcass. Meat-eating lasted for three hours, and the carcass was shared mostly by Figan, Faben, Gigi, Sherry, and Nope.

The previous night Figan, Faben, Gigi, Goblin, Sherry, and Jomeo had been nested in upper LK7. A colobus troop was only 100 m downstream, and I thought for sure that there would be a predation attempt. In the morning the males were only interested in following Gigi (B=1) back to Kasakela.

• 0910.The chimps arrive at the Upper Linda–Kasakela ridge during southbound mshai feeding. As they reach the top of the ridge, a colobus troop is seen immediately less than 100 m away in AK6. Figan immediately put hair-out and Sherry put his arm around Figan. Figan rushed hair-out downhill towards the colobus troop and the others followed (Faben hair-out also). Initially the chimps moved to the uphill side of the troop, and the monkeys were all avoiding.
• 0914. Goblin ball-bounces Figan as they travel through the mshai. Figan, Faben, and the others rush down into the thicket and we lose them as they run after monkeys.
• 0920. After running all over Upper Kasakela and losing my lunch, etc. I find Sherry alone hunting monkeys high up in the trees near the AK5–AK6 branch. Sherry comes to the ground and runs along the ground in the direction of a monkey who is avoiding.

• 0926. We lose Sherry as he continues to run after monkeys. We head back uphill where the main body of the troop seems to be. 0930 There are squeaks and barks by Gigi a ways downhill and we find Figan and Faben traveling together on the ground.
• 0932. Figan, Faben, Gigi, Goblin, and Sherry all sit on the ground. One medium-sized monkey is isolated in the tall trees above. Figan and Faben slowly go in separate trees and the monkey avoids.
• 0934. Gigi crosses the streambed and goes in a tree 20 m from Figan. Figan descends to the ground. Sherry falls 10 m to the ground as his branch breaks; he then rushes over to Figan’s tree where the isolated monkey is vocalizing from up high. The monkey avoids to the canopy as Figan climbs high up into the tree, and the others converge on this tree where Figan has trapped the monkey.
• There is an instant of bad observation as Figan climbs 30 m up. Suddenly, there are waah’s and screams and hair-out by the entire group as they rush up the tree where Figan has just caught the monkey (bad observation). The monkey squeaks briefly, and then I finally see Figan, who is feeding on the monkey. I did not see the capture or the killing, which all took place within a matter of seconds.
• The monkey is medium-sized and very light colored (perhaps albino). There are continued squeaks and screams by the group. Faben pant-hoots. Nope and Mustard arrive and Mustard immediately climbs 5 m up the tree and watches as Faben, Gigi, and Sherry all approach Figan high up in the tree.
• 0936. Figan and possibly others are feeding from the carcass. Very poor observation as the chimps are all 25 m up. Nope pant-grunts then pant-hoots as she goes in the tree.
• 0937. Figan still is in possession of the carcass, then he takes a large piece of meat (perhaps the whole gut) and moves higher in the tree to feed, leaving the carcass to Sherry and Gigi. Mustard screams as perhaps Goblin hits him.
• 0938. There are screams and waah’s as Faben charges hair out and starts hitting Gigi (contact II). Gigi has the carcass and she screams as Faben stamps her several times with his feet.
• 0939. Faben and Sherry now feed from the carcass as Gigi moves off a ways with a small piece of meat. Faben pant-hoots.

• 0941. Faben suddenly with hair-out starts attacking Sherry. Figan displays at the group and there is possible contact as many screams are heard. Sherry has the carcass and is screaming, waah’ing, and avoiding as Faben chases him down the tree. Figan and Faben both display downhill at Sherry, who continues to scream and avoid. Jomeo is screaming continuously also.
• Jomeo arrives with hair-out and is branch-waving. Sherry continues to scream and avoid as Faben chases him. Gigi squeaks and barks. Sherry screams and avoids to the ground with the carcass. Faben is displaying right behind him. Figan is feeding and then displays in the tree near Jomeo, who screams and avoids. Jomeo squeaks full-closed-grin after Figan’s display. Faben drops to the ground and chases Sherry who screams and avoids. Figan has resumed feeding.
• 0943. Sherry holds the carcass in his mouth and continues to avoid Faben. Jomeo is screaming nearby. Sherry squeaks full-closed-grin as Faben (hair-out) approaches and starts feeding from the carcass. Gigi also approaches and feeds from the carcass.
• 0945. The situation is now Faben, Sherry, and Gigi feeding from the carcass a few meters off the ground close to the mshai patches near the Linda–Kasakela ridge. Figan is feeding on the guts in a nearby tree. Nope, Mustard, and Jomeo are off a ways and not feeding. Sherry screams as Faben pulls the carcass away from him. Sherry keeps an entire leg.
• Nope approaches Faben, and Sherry moves off downhill to feed on the leg. Nope extends her arm and touches Sherry‘s mouth (beg). Figan drops to the ground with the guts and walks uphill going into the tree with Faben. Sherry moves out of sight, perhaps near Jomeo. Gigi is feeding on a small piece of meat.
• 0955. Nope and Mustard beg unsuccessfully from Faben. The upper torso of the carcass has been mostly ripped up and eaten. Mustard approaches and begs whimpering from Figan (–).
• 1003. Figan finishes his meat and approaches Faben, who squeaks and continues to feed on the carcass. Nope squeaks and starts feeding directly from the carcass. Nope, Faben, and Figan are all huddled, feeding from the carcass. Nope starts grooming Figan.
• 1006. Figan feeds on an arm and then rips off an entire limb and moves away from Faben. Faben leaves Nope; Nope and Mustard approach Faben and continue to beg. 1018 Nope continues to squeak continuously during begging from Faben; she is frequently successful for small pieces of meat.
• 1021. Faben, with the carcass, approaches Figan. Gigi approaches both of them and begs successfully from Faben for a small piece of meat. Nope approaches the group and pant-grunts to Figan. Goblin is seen on the ground with a small piece of meat which he probably has scavenged.
• 1026. Nope begs unsuccessfully from Faben several times. Finally at 1030 Nope is successful for Faben’s wadge. Mustard begs from Nope and she leaves him. Nope has a large piece of fur which includes the tail.
• 1031. Mustard pulls the entire tail away from Nope and runs off. Goblin approaches Gigi who has meat. Goblin full-closed-grin then full-open-grin to Gigi. Then Gigi bites Goblin who screams frantically. Figan displays at both of them and they scream and avoid. Gigi waah’s.
• 1042. Nope approaches Faben and successfully begs for a very small piece.
• 1050. Nope continues to be intermittently successful from Faben. Nope extends her arm submissively to Figan and then continues to beg from Faben. Two legs and the tailbone are essentially all that is left of the carcass.
• 1053. Sherry returns and has finished his meat. Jomeo isn’t seen and perhaps has traveled off a long time ago. As far as I know Jomeo never begged and never got any meat.
• 1054. Nope touches Figan‘s balls as Gigi and Figan feed directly from the carcass. Faben had taken the ribs and moved off. Goblin is scavenging on the ground.
• 1055. Figan and Gigi continue to feed from the carcass. Gigi squeak-barks as she feeds.
• 1057. Gigi continues to feed from the carcass. Goblin has found a small bone. Sherry is sitting near Faben. Nope approaches Figan and Gigi, and starts feeding from the carcass. Gigi moves off with some meat.
• 1059. Faben pant-hoots, then Sherry displays at Mustard who screams and avoids. Faben charges at Sherry, who makes no response. Mustard avoids Faben.
• 1101. Nope is feeding from the carcass. Figan is in possession. 1108 Nope approaches Sherry, squeaks, full-closed-grin, and touches Sherry on the nose.
• 1110. Nope approaches Figan and feeds from the carcass.
• 1112. Figan leaves Gigi and Nope; they re-approach him and continue begging.
• 1114. Gigi is finally successful for a small piece. Nope continues to beg.
• 1115. Gigi and Nope mutually present and rump-bump. Mustard screams and whimpers as Gigi arm-threatens him. Mustard screams as Gigi threatens him again. Mustard whimpers and squeaks. Nope grooms Gigi. Mustard arm-extends submissively to Gigi and then arm-extends to Nope. Mustard begs from Nope and she gives him a small piece of meat.
• 1117. Gigi is now successful for a large piece of meat (an entire leg?). For the next 20 minutes Nope begs frequently from Figan and is often successful. Mustard intermittently begs from Nope.
• 1138. Nope takes the entire carcass; Figan still has a small bone. Sherry charges at Mustard; Faben charges at Nope. Both Sherry and Mustard approach Nope, who has what’s left of the carcass.
• 1141. Figan and Faben exchange grunts as they feed.
• 1154. Figan with a wadge descends to the ground and feeds with leaves.
• 1200. Faben somehow has been able to get the bulk of the carcass from Nope (bad observation).
• 1218. Figan, Faben, and Gigi are all feeding on small pieces of meat. Nope, Mustard, Sherry, and Goblin are in the distance.
• 1234. The group finally starts moving away from the scene of the predation. The monkey troop has been far off and inaudible ever since the catch and kill by Figan. Most of the meat is finished now. Mustard is traveling with the entire tail (fur only) dangling from his mouth.
