[ Editor’s note: On Day 11 of the Figan Follow, while David and Juma followed Figan in Kasakela, Curt and Yahaya went south and found the young adult male Sniff in Kahama.
By 1974, chimpanzees were already well known for hunting colobus monkeys cooperatively and sharing the meat afterward. This observation from the Kahama community showed a very different pattern: a lone male made the kill by himself and consumed the entire monkey without attempting to attract or recruit other chimpanzees. ]
Curt’s Report: Last night Sniff had been found by a B–record in Fig-tree korongo. He traveled to and nested near the beach in the small korongo between Bare-tree and Busambo.
This morning Sniff was out of his nest at 0645 and he traveled uphill towards Bare-tree korongo. He fed briefly on ngazi, then went to the Bare-tree / Fig-tree fork to feed on muguiza. Sniff then fed on kilukia and budyankende briefly before reaching the mshai up high between Kahama and Fig-tree korongo.
A colobus troop was very close by as Sniff fed on mshai for ½ hour. At 0936 an incredible thing happened as a typical, boring Sniff follow suddenly became quite exciting. Sniff had fed his way to a point above the colobus troop, perhaps trying to give himself a downhill advantage.
The monkeys were giving alarm calls only 20 m. away when Sniff charged downhill after them. After a 40 m. dash on the ground, Sniff ran into a small tree and came 5 m. away from several monkeys who successfully fled out of the tree.
Sniff waited a minute, then charged downhill again. He rushed into another low tree, but again was too late as the monkeys all fled. He then reversed field and rushed uphill and ran into a tree 20 m. away from me.
Yahaya reports that two adult males and one mother-infant pair were in the tree. The males threatened Sniff, who apparently wasn’t afraid. As the mother fled out of the tree, Sniff grabbed her infant who was traveling independently. Sniff came to the ground with the monkey and traveled 20 m. uphill where he went into a tree to feast.
The monkey was alive for another five minutes as Sniff chewed on the head. Sniff finished eating the monkey, bones and all, after 3 ½ hours. He ate it from the head downwards and frequently chewed on leaves with the meat. There had been no vocalizations by Sniff during the entire predation.

The rest of the follow became more standard as Sniff fed continuously before nesting at 1851. Most of the day he spent feeding on mshai in upper Kahama northern forks.
At 1749 Sniff descended into the Kahama korongo way above the waterfall. He fed on kitota and majani ya lucieno before nesting.
No other chimps had been seen or heard during the day. There was tons of mshai that had been eaten in upper Fig-tree and Kahama. Certainly the chimps have been spending a lot of time up there.
Sniff set an all-time record today as he fed on-the-five-minute 130 times. This converts to 10 hours and 50 minutes!! He drank from the streams three times and he defecated seven times.
