Figan, Faben, Humphrey, Mike, and Jomeo came across a colobus troop during travel through Upper Linda Valley. After only five minutes Figan caught a medium-sized monkey. Nope, Mustard, Harmony, and Beethoven were present. Goblin, Miff, Moeza, Gigi, and Sprout arrived later and the meat was widely distributed.

Mike was successful at obtaining the largest part of the carcass. There was considerable ASR during the meat- eating, including two attacks on Gigi and later attacks on Patti and Nope. Meat-eating lasted from 1300 to 1530.

• 1242. Figan, Faben, Humphrey, Mike, and Jomeo are feeding in a misri tree on the Upper Linda-Rutanga ridge when there are screams 50 m downhill on the Linda side (probably Goblin and Mustard playing). The males all rush off in that direction – many screams and waah’s. We temporarily lose Figan – a Jomeo/Patti copulation is seen.
• 1243. Find Figan and Faben traveling across the LK4 korongo. They do two sets of pant- hoot-drum displays. Humphrey is submissive to Figan.
• 1254. The group is traveling towards the main branch of LK4 when colobus monkeys are seen and heard between LK4 and the main Linda stream. The males immediately travel in that direction.
• 1256. After crossing the main LK4 streambed the chimps sit and watch colobus monkeys who are avoiding and giving alarm calls 30 m off.
• 1258. The chimps continue to sit. Figan, Faben, Jomeo, Mike, and Humphrey are well dispersed on the ground. We are still in the periphery of the colobus troop.
• 1300. Figan puts hair out and runs downhill towards the main part of the troop. All the males quickly follow Figan. It is quite dense and we temporarily lose the chimps. Thirty seconds later we find the males all sitting close together on the ground looking up at monkeys. It is quite dense and I didn’t see any monkeys, though many were heard above.
• 1301. Figan leads another rush downhill and we temporarily lose him as we stay with the other males. Seconds later squeaks are heard as Figan caught a medium-sized monkey about 20 m up in a tall miombo tree. Figan was the only chimp observed to go in the trees and there clearly was no cooperation in the hunt as the other males stayed back on the ground.
• We only had a few seconds of bad observation during Figan’s hunt and during this time the monkey was caught. The monkey was dead instantly though the actual kill was not observed. As soon as Figan caught the monkey there were screams by Mike, Humphrey, and Faben as they rushed into the tree with Figan.
• 1302. Mike and Faben approach Figan to beg quite high up in the tree. Humphrey joins them and many squeaks are heard. Mustard pant-hoots. All I can see is a big heap of chimps as Mike, Humphrey, and Faben are all trying to get meat from Figan.
• 1303. Faben squeaks and screams continuously. There are many nearby pant-hoots as chimps converge on the area. Jomeo is still on the ground and he leaves the group. Perhaps Jomeo went off to hunt again, however he wasn’t seen for the rest of the day and he just didn’t seem to be interested in trying to get meat.
• 1304. The males are all feeding in a big ball high up in the tree. Continued poor observation. Faben pant-hoots, then there are screams by Mike and waah’s as he grabs at the carcass.
• 1305. Mike, Humphrey, and Figan are all feeding directly from the carcass. The chimps have now quieted down considerably. Faben feeds on a large piece of meat a few meters away. Nope and Mustard are merely watching from a few meters away.
• 1306. I had heard other chimps close by and now they are identified as the strange mother-infant pair (later to be named Harmony and Beethoven). The infant is a female (?) about the size of Prof and with a white beard. Harmony is small and young with a large tail tuft. She is seen begging from Faben. Faben puts hair-out, branch-waves, and stamps briefly on Beethoven (contact I). Beethoven screams and Harmony does nothing. Beethoven seems to be relatively independent of Harmony and is often seen over 20 m away from her.

• 1308. Humphrey touches Faben’s balls. Figan and Mike feed directly from the carcass; Figan in possession. Faben hair-out approaches Figan, extends arm and grabs a leg of the carcass and begins feeding. Figan puts hair out and charges a few meters with the carcass. Humphrey and Harmony avoid.
• 1309. Nope and Mustard feed on leaves a few meters off – still no attempt to obtain meat.
• 1311. Figan branch displays at Humphrey and Mike who scream and avoid Figan’s charge. Figan and Mike now feed alone on the carcass as Humphrey and Faben have moved off a ways. The head has been completely eaten.
• 1312. Faben, Mike, and Humphrey are all draped around Figan trying to get some meat. They are still in the same tree where the monkey had been caught. Humphrey and Faben arm-extend as Figan holds the carcass away from them. Humphrey squeaks as he is wrapped around Mike trying to get meat. Mike is screaming with glottal cramps. Faben grabs a tail of the carcass and starts feeding. Mike has a very large piece – perhaps an arm. Nope pant-grunts and advances, and Humphrey screams and avoids as Figan charges down the tree after him.
• There are distant pant-hoots and the place erupts with noise – pant-hoots, screams, and waah’s. Both Mike and Humphrey scream full-open-grin, and there are continued waah’s. Humphrey screams and avoids as Figan displays and chases him into very dense foliage close to the ground. Many other chimps were screaming and there easily could have been an attack. Figan, Mike, Humphrey, Nope, Mustard, and Harmony were all hidden in the foliage and there was much screaming. Figan emerged and descended to the ground followed closely by Mike. Faben pant- hooted with a very large piece of meat.
• 1318. Mike, Humphrey, and Figan are all draped around the carcass on the ground. Figan and Mike are ripping at the carcass. Faben and Nope join the heap. There are many screams and squeaks and all the chimps have full-open-grins.
• 1319. Nope kisses Faben. Faben bite-kisses Mike. Figan still with the carcass. There are distant pant-hoots, and pant-grunts by Nope as she begs in the middle of the tight group. Figan and Mike are feeding directly from the carcass. Nope has a mouthful of meat. Nope pant-grunts and hand-to-hand gives some of her meat to Humphrey!! Goblin has been present during the entire predation and is still merely watching from the periphery.
• 1320. Harmony is descending a tree but she screams and moves back up when she sees us nearby. Humphrey walks uphill and is followed by Faben.
• 1321. There is now no intact carcass – just many large pieces of meat. Mike has the largest piece which consists of the main part of the carcass (ribs etc.). Miff and Moeza arrive. Figan charges downhill at them and they scream and avoid. Miff approaches Figan and begs unsuccessfully. Miff begs from Figan for several minutes (-) and then Figan moves back uphill with the others. Goblin is submissive to Figan. Miff follows Figan and continues begging. Figan is feeding on a limb.
• 1326. Goblin attacks Moeza (contact II), who screams and crouches as Goblin drags and throws her for several seconds. (redirection?) Figan goes in a tree with others and many pant-grunts are heard; many pant-hoots ensue. Miff follows Figan up the tree and continues to beg.
• 1329. Figan has descended to the ground. He displays, branch-dragging on the ground, charges into a tree then displays back down to the ground. Mike descends to the ground with the carcass. Humphrey pant-hoots and there are group screams. Gigi has arrived and she sits next to Figan, Miff, and Moeza. Figan displays at the group and there are many screams and avoids. Humphrey displays after Figan.
• 1335. I announce that Satan has arrived, but realize soon afterwards that it is Sprout and not Satan. Sprout is a huge aging female with a face identical to Satan’s. Figan puts hair out, goes bipedal, and lip-flips upon Sprout’s arrival.
• 1336. All chimps are now on the ground. Gigi begs from Mike; Sprout begs from Faben. Figan gives Miff a large piece of meat. Gigi now begs unsuccessfully from Figan. Sprout begs from Mike. Faben displays downhill a ways and squeaks are heard. Humphrey displays at and chases Sprout who screams and avoids.
• 1342. Figan, Faben, Humphrey, Mike, and Gigi all sit peacefully together on a log. Gigi is the only one without meat. Moeza whimpers as she begs from Miff.
• 1352. Figan and Faben charge downhill and attack Gigi. Gigi approaches Figan and resumes begging. She then moves downhill and begs from Mike. Faben sits next to Figan – no begging. Faben without meat.
• 1353. There are loud screams from up in a tree – perhaps from either Mustard or Beethoven. Gigi pant-bobs and avoids as Faben displays at her. Figan puts hair out. Sprout begs frantically from Figan and is unsuccessful. Figan and Faben display downhill (bad observation); screams are heard. Faben grunts (Figan, pant-grunt, ??) and close-faces Figan for meat (-). Faben has a full-closed-grin as he begs hand-to- mouth from Figan (-). Sprout is now begging from Humphrey.
• 1402. Figan charges bipedal and attacks Mike, stamping him on the back several times. Faben displays also. Faben then approaches Figan, and Figan evades a begging attempt by Faben. Faben grabs a part of Figan’s meat and chews on it briefly.
• 1405. Faben hand-to-mouth beg successful for a large piece from Figan. Faben initiates pant-hoots and Figan leads as they charge downhill displaying. Humphrey follows with an attack on Gigi. Gigi screams full-open-grin and then presents to Faben. Humphrey, Gigi, and Sprout had avoided the initial Figan, Faben displays before Humphrey attacked Gigi.
• 1408. Mike continues to feed on the carcass. Sprout furiously feeds from the carcass which Mike is holding. Figan has only a wadge left.
• 1409. Figan displays and chases Sprout who screams and avoids. Gigi also avoids. Sprout approaches and presents to Figan who inspects.
• 1410. Gigi obtains the entire tail of the carcass from Mike and she moves off. Sprout bite- kisses Figan who has a wadge in his mouth. Figan rests with his wadge as Sprout begs from Mike nearby. Moeza and Beethoven are playing in the trees above. Sprout is successful for a fairly large piece from Mike. Sprout moves off a ways and glottal cramps are heard from a chimp (perhaps Harmony) who is begging from Sprout. Sprout returns and continues begging from Mike.
• 1430. Sprout continues to beg from Mike and is often successful for small pieces. Mike is the only chimp still with meat and the others are resting or sitting within 30 m. Patti has been present during the entire predation and she has not be observed to get any meat or to beg. Humphrey and Figan chew on wadges as it rains lightly. Moeza and Beethoven continue to play above.
• 1506. Nope is off in the periphery as Mustard approaches to 3 m from Figan. Mustard with a pout face, whimpers, squeaks, and arm-extents to Figan. Mustard has his head turned away during the entire ASR sequence.
• 1517. Mustard stamps several times on Moeza’s back and Moeza makes no response – possible play context.
• 1522. Sprout continues to beg from Mike.
• 1526. The group finally travels off towards the Linda stream. Figan is last in the travel order.

At the Linda stream the colobus troop is seen again. The chimps look briefly and then continue up to the Linda mshai. During travel Humphrey attacks Patti. Figan, still at the back of the travel order, attacks Nope in response. The group, still intact from the meat-eating, then travels to Upper Rutanga for mshai.
