Mike Steals Guinea Fowl from Baboons

Figan, Faben, and Goblin were in Camp at 1423 when they heard baboon vocalizations from the southwest near KK0. They hurried out of Camp and practically ran all of the way there, pant-hooting often and with hair out. There was a Faben/Goblin ASR, and as a result, Goblin avoided screaming. They reached the baboon troop (Camp Troop) and displayed about several individuals. Figan full-open-grin approaches Faben, and Faben touches Figan’s balls. Both hair-out screaming. Both whimper, full-open- squeak. They start to follow some baboons.

At 1431 Mike and Miff arrive; Faben attacks Mike (contact I) who screams and avoids. Faben waah’s. Mike approaches Figan pant-grunting. The baboons are fighting ahead and the three males seem to follow one group east for about 100 m.

There is an unobserved snatch of a guinea fowl (like a chicken: ground-dwelling, pretty big bird, black and white feathers) by Mike from an adult male baboon. Mike gets the main body of the bird, while the baboon retains one wing and rib cage. I shall refer to the baboon as PosBab.

Goblin beats up Moeza who screams. Mike snatched the bird at 1435. Figan and Faben close-face Mike as he goes into a tree. Many baboons including young ones are here. Figan charges into the tree. Mike is chased up in the tree by PosBab. PosBab threatens Mike repeatedly within arm’s reach with yawn threats. Goblin arrives with Miff.

Figan sits in a tree with Faben and Mike. No active begging by anybody to Mike. Fifi arrives. PosBab approaches and displays at Mike. Figan and Faben display at baboons. Several waah’s. Then PosBab sits within 2 m. Fifi approaches and begs from Mike.

• 1439. Figan approaches others and he displays and chases Mike and Fifi. Mike avoids. Figan approaches Faben. PosBab is chasing other male baboons often on the ground. He has descended. Many baboons in the vicinity, including females and young. Faben approaches and close-faces Mike. PosBab chases another baboon.
• 1443. Figan and Faben continue close-facing Mike, no begging. Melissa arrives. She sits within 2 m and then comes to within arm’s reach of Mike, Figan, and Faben. Mike just has a wadge by 1445.
• 1445. PosBab charges and another male redirects against Goblin and chases Goblin in the tree. Figan then charges through the tree and attacks Goblin (contact I). A young male and a female baboon scuffle with Goblin and dab at him, gecking or screaming.
• Figan, with a full-open-grin, arm-threatens some baboons. (?) Fifi approaches me and takes bird feathers from my breast pocket and licks them. Freud close-faces Figan and then Mike.
• 1454. Faben comes down and lands on Goblin. Goblin whimpers. Mike approaches a baboon who avoids. Mike just has a little wadge now and the chimps resume travel and feeding on vines nearby. The group soon breaks up.
