The scene: many chimps on KK3 eating leaves. Included are the following chimps: Figan, Faben, Humphrey, Mike, Evered, Jomeo, Hugo, Goblin, Sherry, Athena, Atlas, Gigi, Patti, Sparrow, and Winkle.

• 0930. Figan travels north upslope near KK3 after finishing eating nearby a large group of animals. Accompanying him are Goblin, Gigi, Sherry, and Jomeo. A colobus troop is on the other side (east side) of KK3. This seems to be the same troop which the chimps have been near for the past two nights (see the August 9th report on Figan’s attempt).
• The previous night these red colobus were very close, and Humphrey, Mike, and Figan charged up trees, scattering colobus, but not chasing them. This was at about 1840. The colobus slept nearby and left the feeding chimps, going south of the korongo during the early morning.

• 0933. Evered charges down into the korongo after Figan has passed up the troop, heading south. The sudden charge by Evered prompts Figan to start running east also. He catches up with Evered and Goblin, and Evered bobs and pant-grunts to Figan.
• 0935. Figan, Goblin, Sherry, and Faben are all chasing, with the monkeys going FAST. Figan charging up and down in the trees. Sherry, Gigi, Atlas, Faben, on the ground, looking up, and frequently going to bases of trees. It seems that Figan has isolated early one individual as he starts chasing it to the west, back down into the valley.
• Figan descends the tree and crosses the korongo looking up in trees and then ascends another tree and comes within 5 m of a juvenile. He takes a sudden lunge and grabs it, and then loses it briefly and then re-captures it within a few seconds. Active hunting from 0938 to 0949 when it is caught.
• Immediately animals start arriving. Gigi arrives first and tugs at the feet. The kill is pretty instantaneous with biting into the head by Figan; no flailing. Many screams and wraah’s as others arrive.
• Sherry arrives within 30 seconds and grapples at it. Faben arrives. Figan with full- close-grin grabbing at it with Goblin, Faben, and Sherry within 45 seconds. All screaming. Goblin gets a small piece right off and avoids a few meters. Many food- grunts. Gigi arrives. Atlas and Hugo arrive. Evered arrives. Evered chases Goblin (bad observation) for his piece.
• 0951. Mike arriving. Hugo, Humphrey, and Faben all at the carcass. Atlas within arm’s reach of all trying to get at meat. Sherry gets some and avoids to another tree. Evered might have a leg. Evered bobs and pant-grunts and screams to Figan within 5 m. Atlas approaches Evered and screams and kisses the screaming Evered. Many pant-hoots in the distance. Gigi gets a piece of skin and avoids to 10 m.

• 0954. Winkle, Passion, and Pom arrive. Athena arrives. Miff, Nope, and Mustard arrive. So, Sherry, Faben, and Gigi have meat … Figan. Hugo and Mike next to Figan. Humphrey arrives. Faben has a large piece of meat. Faben sits at arm’s reach.
• Winkle ascends tree and sits within 5 m. Gilka arrives. Figan displays at Evered in the tree and repositions himself in the tree. Evered avoids screaming. Hugo and Mike quickly surround Figan. Faben also approaches. Athena approaches others. Gilka climbs up to Sherry in neighboring tree. Miff and Moeza on the ground. Athena and Humphrey have approached Figan, Faben, Mike, and Hugo around the carcass. Figan still in possession. Bad observation of begging as it is very high up in tree. Patti arrives.
• 0957. Faben pant-hoots. Gigi on the ground after Faben displays at her. Nope, Mustard, and Gigi on the ground, as is Pom. Passion leaves. Gilka leaves Pom with a small, meatless bone. Gigi has a wadge on the ground and Mustard is there looking at her. Pom follows Gigi. All pant-hoot. There are displays in the tree and Hugo, Athena, and Mike reform about Figan and Faben. Atlas descends the tree. Faben has a leg. Hugo gets a big piece and moves higher up in the tree. Figan and Mike and Faben together. Athena and Humphrey are within 5 m.
• Miff approaches Gigi and close-faces her. Atlas has a piece of meat and screams as someone chases him. Athena coming down out of the tree as Atlas is screaming. Athena attacks Atlas for the meat. Gigi hair-out, branch-waving charge past the [??] and all scream. Winkle full-open-grin screams and approaches Athena and feels Athena’s bottom. Athena full-open-grin whimpers. Humphrey descends the tree and chases Gigi into a tree. Gigi has Atlas’s meat somehow and Humphrey chases her into a small tree. Evered is down on the ground now. Humphrey chasing Gigi at 1002. Gigi avoiding, screaming.
• 1002. Humphrey chasing Gigi and then descends chasing her. Goblin attacks Atlas (for meat?) and Figan displays in the tree at 1003. Humphrey chases Gigi through a small tree and Humphrey attacks Gigi (contact II) on the ground. She sits and presents full-open-grin, screaming to Humphrey and he inspects. Now Humphrey attacks her again (contact I) and Evered hair-out charges me and hits me and attacks Gigi/Humphrey. Athena waah’s and Gigi screams, avoiding. None of the chimps have meat and Evered soon finds Gigi’s dropped piece.
• Gigi barks for a long time and whimpers. Faben chases a bunch of females out of the tree. Sparrow is here. Mike descends the tree and approaches Evered and presents with hair-out and full-open-grin and then Mike touches Evered’s balls. Mike has a big piece of meat which turns out to be a leg and the spine with the lower entrails and perhaps the stomach: a lot of meat. He also has the tail.
• 1008. Humphrey, Gigi, Evered, and Goblin are on the ground with Mike. No one begs from him at this time. Baboons arrive; perhaps Bald Soko. No blue-tailed monkeys were observed. (A joke!) (Ha,ha,ha). Humphrey approaches Mike with a full-open- grin and both grunt to each other. Faben then Humphrey pant-hoot. Patti is begging from Figan with Faben eating within arm’s reach. Sparrow for sure is begging from Hugo. Mike guards his meat from Humphrey who close-faces.
• 1015. Athena approaches and hand-to-hand begs from Evered, and Aphrodite is also very interested in Evered‘s bone. Sparrow begs from Hugo and Patti and Faben near Figan. Humphrey not begging from Mike but sits within arm’s reach. Evered sucks on the bone. Gigi approaches Mike and close-faces Mike. Evered gives Athena the bone and she sucks on it. The chimps that are about on the ground below the tree are Figan, Faben, Sparrow, Winkle, Patti, and Hugo [are] Mike, Humphrey, Goblin, Athena, Evered, Pom (no Passion), and Gigi. In the distance are Sherry, Gilka, Nope, and Mustard. Dove and Dominic appear, as does a strange (unhabituated) mother who we saw earlier in the morning (see Stranger Report).
• Miff and Moeza arrive and Goblin attacks Moeza who screams. Miff approaches and pant-grunts to Humphrey. She full-open screams and avoids Humphrey who has hair out. Humphrey touches her and they embrace and Humphrey inspects Miff. Miff, Athena, Gigi, and Humphrey all close-face Mike.
• 1026. Winkle descends the tree. Miff goes to 5 m of Mike, and Evered and Miff groom. Winkle also approaches them and they groom. Athena and Aphrodite close-face interestedingly at Mike. Aphrodite quite frequently touches meat and then licks her finger. She dangles over Mike’s ventral and is close-facing Mike frequently. Mike tolerates her very well.
• 1033. Gigi remains within arm’s reach of Mike with Athena and Humphrey. Gigi shows no attention to the meat, resting. Winkle and Dove and Strange Mother [Harmony] sit together without begging in tree, while Sparrow continues to beg from Hugo, and Patti from Figan and Faben.
• 1045. Atlas has a small piece of bone (from Athena?). Humphrey arm-threatens Atlas.
• 1049. Figan and Faben descend their tree to another one, leaving Patti. Winkle approaches Athena who has Atlas’s bone and close-faces her. Evered grooms with Gigi; Miff leaving. Humphrey gets a small piece of meat from Mike. Nope and Mustard are still here.
• 1050. Athena approaches Mike and hand-to-hand begs for a while, unsuccessfully.
• 1100. Miff, Nope, and Mustard have left as have Passion and Pom. Athena still begs from Mike, and Humphrey has a small bone. Figan and Faben descend their tree at 1106 with hair out, and Figan has a lot of meat in his mouth, but none otherwise. Atlas approaches Figan at 1107 and close-faces. Gigi and Winkle congregate around Figan also. Gigi presents at Faben and Faben inspects her.
• 1110. Athena begs from Figan, and Gigi grooms Faben. Winkle gets a bone from Humphrey nearby. Gilka and Evered are within 15 m of Figan. Athena full-open whimpers at Figan when unsuccessful in begging. Figan gives Athena a piece of bone and then gets another small bone. Atlas whimpers when he doesn’t get a bone from Athena. He has a hoot/whimper face. Athena full open kisses Figan in excitement.
• 1120. Figan and Faben hair-out, charge, and drum. Faben started pant-hooting and started the display, scattering the chimps. Gigi approaches Figan and hand-to-hand begs. Figan inspects Gigi. Faben approaches and presents to Figan for grooming. Figan grooms Faben. Figan leaf-grooms at 1124 while wadging.
• 1127. Athena full-closed-grin begs from Figan with no success. Athena whimpers and Faben displays as does Figan, scattering the group again. Evered full-open-grin, screams, and bobs to Figan as Figan branches and drags a branch past him.
• Winkle approaches and hand-to-mouth begs from Figan, who moves off a few meters. Winkle re-approaches and hand-to-hand and hand-to-mouth begs. Wilkie approaches Evered, and Evered full-open-grin embraces Wilkie and briefly grooms Wilkie. Wilkie leaves. Figan and Faben charge hair-out and Evered pant-grunts, bobs, and avoids into a tree. Figan charges at Humphrey and Mike and they avoid into the tree. Figan hair-out approaches Evered, and Evered grooms Faben as Faben presents for grooming.
• 1158. Gilka approaches Figan, and Figan grooms Gilka for a brief time. Gilka begs from Figan. Faben and Evered are nearby with Humphrey and Mike greater than 15 m. Figan stays to rest and the meat is finished as he gives Gilka two small bones and she avoids.
