Finish:17:41 (nest)
Duration:10 hr. 44 min.
Observers:Curt Busse and Yassini Selemani

Curt’s Report. Figan did a brief branching display as he descended from his nest at 0657. Satan and Evered, who had nested here last night, weren’t seen this morning. One- by-one Humphrey, Patti, and Mike left Figan as he traveled up Sleeping Valley, feeding briefly on muguiza, ngazi, and kitota.

As Figan traveled alone into Upper KK1 he ran across a colobus troop. Figan sat beneath the troop and watched intensely before leaving the monkeys and traveling down to the Kakombe stream where he fed on ngazi (see Predation Report).

Mike rejoined Figan and they groomed briefly before traveling to KK9 where they met Evered who was feeding alone on ngazi. Evered rapidly descended the tree, pant- grunted and bobbed, then screamed and avoided as Figan displayed at him.

Mike sits near the top of the dry Kasakela waterfall.

Figan left Evered and Mike and traveled to a nearby ngazi tree to feed for 45 minutes. Figan and Mike then rejoined at the KK6 muguiza tree. Figan fed for 40 minutes then followed Mike to the ground where they rested for 45 minutes. As they rested, there were scores of pant-hoots, screams, and waah’s from near Camp, and finally at 1238 Figan and Mike jumped up with full-open-grins and hair-out in response to these distant vocalizations. Figan held his balls then pant-hooted.

Mike.

Surprisingly, Figan and Mike didn’t travel down to investigate these vocalizations. Instead they briefly groomed with Nope and Mustard, then traveled to The Peak and groomed again. They fed on muguiza at the Kasakela waterfall before grooming for another ½ hour. Mike then initiated and led travel to the mnazi trees below Linda Peak where they fed for an hour before nesting at 1730. After they had nested, there were distant pant-hoots from Lower Kasakela (probably Evered’s), but there was no vocal response by Figan or Mike.

ASR Details. At 0939 Figan and Mike were traveling through KK9 when they met Evered who was feeding in an ngazi tree. Evered rapidly descended the tree, pant-bobbed, bobbed, and approached Figan then screamed and avoided as Figan displayed at Evered. Figan immediately left Evered and traveled uphill to feed on ngazi. Figan traveled alone with Mike for the rest of the day. Figan and Mike once reacted with full-open-grins to distant pant-hoots. That evening as Figan and Mike were resting in their nests at Linda Peak they heard several chimps pant-hooting from Lower Kasakela (one of them was most likely Evered). They made no vocal response and stayed in their nests for the evening.

Nesting Details. Figan and Mike were feeding on mnazi below Linda Peak at 1706 when Mike descended the tree and built his nest in an adjacent mnazi tree. Figan continued feeding until 1732 when he built his nest 15 m downhill from Mike. Figan rapid-grunted as he rested in his nest. Minutes later there were many distant pant-hoots from Lower Kasakela. Figan and Mike made no vocal response and remained nested for the entire night.
