Day 27: Adult Male Colobus Monkey Shoves Figan

Date:July 26, 1974
Start:07:00 (nest)
Finish:18:05 (nest)
Duration:11 hr. 5 min.
Observers:David Riss and Hamisi Matama

David’s Report. The brothers along with Mike and Pallas ate muguiza until 0725 and then they headed to Camp. Figan ate ngazi alone near the Dell. He then met up with Jomeo and Pallas for a short time and then left them to find and display under Humphrey‘s tree. Sparrow was nearby. Athena and Atlas nearby. They started to walk back to Camp from the waterfall area, and the group broke up once again as Figan ate ngazi. He went back to Camp by 1200 and stayed there for an hour, grooming some with Satan. He left Camp by himself, not following Satan to the south, and went off to the northwest and fed on msongati for a while.

At 1600, while feeding on kitota, he ran into Faben, Athena, and Atlas. An adult male colobus approached and frightened Atlas, and Figan chased it away (see Other Colobus Sightings). They soon nested by 1800. Another very slow day. Atlas was without Athena for an hour. He whimpered some but ate with Figan and Faben. He pant-hooted as did Athena upon their reunion.

ASSR Details. Humphrey and Sherry submissive, as are Goblin and others.

Figan drinks from the Kakombe stream.

Nesting Details. The two brothers Figan and Faben with Athena and Atlas finish mkuyu at 1803 and head 25 m to trees. Faben nests first as Figan watches on the ground. Figan makes his nest around 1805. They nest within 5 m of each other. Athena and Atlas don’t make nests until after 1815 when we leave. They were 20 m away.
