Day 3: Evered Submissive to Figan in Camp

Date:July 2, 1974
Start:06:58 (nest)
Finish:19:00 (nest)
Duration:12 hr. 2 min.
Observers:Curt Busse and Petro Leo

Curt’s Report. Figan was up at 0658 and he displayed three times during travel towards Camp. Fifi and Humphrey joined Figan. Figan displayed at Humphrey upon arrival. Figan passed right through Camp and went to the kilukia tree east of Camp. Winkle and Hugo were already there. Humphrey, Fifi, Patti, and Sherry arrived separately later. Humphrey copulated with Patti. Sherry was submissive to Figan as Figan traveled alone to feed on ngazi at KK9.

At 0925 there were distant vocalizations from Camp that sent Figan leaping down from the ngazi tree and running towards Camp. Figan drummed at KK9 and arrived in Camp with hair-out soon afterwards. Faben, Evered, and Hugo were in trees as Figan displayed silently into Camp. Evered came to the ground and pant-bobbed to Figan a few meters out of Camp. Faben made no response to Figan’s display. Hugo approached Figan and they mutually embraced (Figan full-open-grin). Evered bobbed again to Figan and they both extended arms for a touch. Figan and Faben groomed a few meters from Evered and Hugo.

Hugo, Figan, and Faben left Evered and they traveled to an mkuyu tree northwest of Camp. Patti arrived and there were copulations in rapid succession with Hugo, Faben, and Figan. Winkle and Fifi joined the group on Peak Ridge for some msongati. There were several pant-hoots by the group and another group in KK2.

At 1404, Figan and Faben met Gigi who was feeding on the ridge below The Peak. Faben displayed at Gigi; Figan merely put hair out and went into the tree to feed with Gigi. At 1450, Gigi, Patti, Faben, and Figan fed briefly on siafu at AK3 before moving into Upper Kasakela for a long bout of mshai. Figan and Faben displayed at Rocky Peak upon seeing Athena and Atlas across KK7 on Bald Soko. Athena and Atlas joined the group. Jomeo arrived at 1619 and he was submissive to Figan.

This group hit kitota, mshai, and magugunwa in Upper Linda and fed briefly on budyankende in Upper Linda. Miff was found in her nest as Figan and Faben displayed upon arrival at a lusieno tree near the Upper Linda stream. As the group fed, Miff remained nested and Moeza screamed constantly during rough play with Atlas. Atlas displayed several times at Moeza, and Miff paid little attention. At 1836 Figan, Faben, Athena, Atlas, and Gigi traveled north across the Linda stream and fed on budyankende before nesting high up in Linda at 1856. Aphrodite rode dorsal on Atlas for several meters during travel to the nesting site.

ASR Details. At 0925 Figan was feeding on ngazi in KK9 when there were vocalizations from Camp. Figan leapt from the tree and rushed to Camp, doing a pant-hoot-drum display on the way. Figan displayed into Camp where Evered, Faben, and Hugo had been grooming in the trees. Evered rushed down from the tree and pant-grunted, pant-bobbed, and bobbed as Figan finished his display. Figan sat hunched with hair-out as Evered approached to 2 m. Faben had made no response to Figan’s display while Hugo had pant-hooted.

Quite surprisingly, Evered and Faben then exchanged grunts!!! Hugo approached Figan who with a full-open-grin, hunch, embraced with Hugo. Evered pant-grunted and pant-bobbed during this embrace. Faben approached the group with hair-out and Evered rushed over to Figan bobbing and pant-grunting. Figan had hair-out as he extended an arm and touched hands with Evered.

Nesting Details. Figan, Faben, Gigi, Athena, and Atlas had been travel-feeding on budyankende in Upper Linda when they stopped in a small “clearing.” The group sat for a minute and then Faben went into a tree to nest following many grunts by the group. Figan, Gigi, Athena, and Atlas then went into various trees. Faben started building his nest at 1856, followed by Gigi, Athena, Atlas, and Figan – all in separate trees. Figan was about 15 m from the others. The next morning Figan was found in a new nest only 3 m from Faben.
