David’s Report. Text here

Atlas (age 7 ) eats “bamboo” (local name: matete).

After two and one half hours of muhasha, and after Evered, Jomeo, Sherry, and Hugo arrival with displays by Figan – Figan, Goblin, Gigi, Evered, and Jomeo started to move south up the KK3 korongo. Evered heard some colobus nearby which Figan had ignored for two days and started to hunt them. Figan, Gigi, Goblin, and Faben joined in and after 10 minutes of hunting, Figan caught a colobus (see Predation Report).

Old adult male Sheldon (age 41) was found eating a colobus monkey on July 15, 2024. During 30 minutes of observation, Sheldon remained silent and made no attempt to recruit other chimps to share the carcass.

Many chimps soon arrived. Sherry, Hugo, Mike, Figan, and Faben all got large pieces of meat. Others present include Dove, Passion, Nope, Athena, Gilka, Miff, Jomeo, Goblin, Humphrey, Evered, Gigi, and Patti. There were many ASRs during the predation, including Athena stealing a piece of meat from Atlas; then Gigi displaying at Athena; and Humphrey chasing Gigi who got the meat; and then Evered attacking Humphrey and Gigi who were embroiled in a vicious fight. Many displays at Evered by Figan and Faben.

After several more hours of muhasha following the kill, Figan and Faben with Miff and Goblin left KK3, as others had done during the afternoon. At 1630 they started down to the Dell and Figan arrived in Camp alone at 1830. He ended up nesting in Kakombe downstairs. Our young strange mother-infant pair [Harmony and Beethoven] was seen during muhasha feeding in the morning and at the predation.

ASSR Details. Evered arrival: scream with full-open-grin by Evered when sees Figan; Figan displays. Five minutes later Figan displays and Evered bobs; Evered bobs three times more in next 3 minutes. Many displays and attacks during the predation. See the Predation Report for details. After the predation, Figan and Faben display often in front of Evered, at 1213, 1214, 1237, and 1245.

Nesting Details. After finishing mumanda alone at 1925, he traveled up to where Hugo had nested on the main path and nested, pant-hooting with Patti. He woke up the next morning at 0630 and traveled to an ngazi tree where he unroosted a baboon.
