Day 42: Silent Travel to Mkenke — More Muhasha

Date:August 10, 1974
Start:07:35
Finish:20:01 (nest)
Duration:12 hr. 26 min.
Observers:David Riss and Emilie van Zinnicq Bergmann-Riss

David’s Report. Figan was not found in his nest where he was nested at 2008 the previous night. After many vocalizations, Figan was found with other chimps on the top of Sleeping Buffalo, still in the KK3 korongo. There the chimps continued to feed on the new leaves that they discovered the day before: muhasha.

They fed there from 0730 to 1010 when Sparrow screamed as Mike arrived. After some displays by Figan and Faben, Humphrey, Figan, Faben, Mike, Gigi, Sparrow, Gilka, Athena, and Atlas went silently into Sleeping Valley. Several times Atlas threatened Gilka and Sparrow with rocks and frequently he threw rocks at Gilka. He hit Sparrow with a stick twice, prompting Sparrow to chase Atlas.

The Mkenke waterfall, Gombe’s tallest. Anne Pusey stands near the bottom.

The females were left at the Mkenke stream above the waterfall and the four males traveled up the southern korongo’s stream and then lazily crossed it going north again. They groomed and fed on mnazi here. The males were quiet but were not searching for chimps, it seemed. There were no special foods that they grooved on. They returned into Mkenke’s stream area pant-hooting and displaying, with no responses.

They quickly headed back, Figan and Faben breaking from Humphrey and Mike for a short while, to KK3 for another three hours of muhasha. Many chimps were in the valley, and then Figan ate with Mike, Humphrey, and Sparrow. But also in the valley were Passion, Athena, Nova, Winkle, Gigi, Goblin, Faben, and others. They nested in KK3 again after late feed on muhasha, which was interrupted by a little kitota and mnazi leaves.

Humphrey showed up in Camp the morning of Day 42 looking completely disheveled. Some of the students thought that he might be sick, but they would soon discover that many of the chimps looked like this. The entire Kasakela community had been feeding for two days in the muhasha patch in KK3. Contact with this sticky vine left their hair a mess.

ASSR Details. Atlas’s repeated harassment of Gilka for 5 minutes while traveling through Sleeping Valley is noteworthy. He repeatedly threw rocks at her and she arm-threatened him once, but usually just avoided. It seemed to me that he was aggressive rather than playing with her. Atlas also hit Sparrow with a stick and Sparrow chased him while she was full-open-grin screaming. Atlas avoided.

Nesting Details. After going up a tree, Figan descended and went back up the KK3 korongo and ate muhasha until dark at 1952. He then descended his tree and traveled to the valley floor of KK3 and drummed and pant-hooted. Many other chimps pant-hooted. He then nested about 30 m from his nest last night. He pant-hooted after making his nest. He had eaten kitota from 1810 to 1820 and looked like he was going to bed around 1830, but then there was the colobus short attempt and then muhasha. I do not know what time the others went to bed.
