Day 36: Figan Destroys Evered’s Nest
| Date: | August 4, 1974 |
| Start: | 06:30 (nest) |
| Finish: | 17:45 (nest) |
| Duration: | 11 hr. 15 min. |
| Observers: | David Riss and Yahaya Almasi |
Figan awoke early to display four times and drum twice in the presence of Evered and Humphrey. Evered avoided his nest at 0630 and Figan proceeded to destroy it. He went off on his own to eat ngazi until 0745. He returned to the nesting site to find no one … He then drummed twice, but no one answered him. He saw Atlas near the Dell and ran into Passion on the trail to Camp. He arrived in Camp to find Melissa, Goblin, Sherry, and Hugo.
After a short stay, he left Camp to the northwest with Sherry. Sherry soon split from Figan, who went to the main trail to feed on ngazi for an hour. There he met Goblin and together they hit the muguiza tree downstairs. They then went to Kasakela to feed on mumanda. Sherry joined and Figan and Goblin left Sherry to head east to feed on kitota and then north to the mnazi. Goblin was left behind as Figan traveled up the Linda- Kasakela ridge and around Linda Peak, feeding on msongati and mnazi until 1500 when he napped. He awoke to nest 10 minutes later. He used branches that he had picked on the ground to refurbish an old nest. He was alone from 1400 to 1745.
ASSR Detail: Figan was awake as we arrived at 0630 and he did three branching displays, and completely destroyed Evered‘s nest as he avoided. Figan moved off after the four- minute displays and drummed twice en route to ngazi. At 0745 he returned, but found no one. He did two pant-hoot-drum displays; no one answered him.
Figan then went to Camp and spent the rest of the day with Goblin and Sherry, and by himself without major ASSRs.
Nesting Detail: Figan nests alone on Linda Peak. He had eaten mnazi leaves from 1603 to 1653 and then rested in his tree. Then he ate again from 1732 to 1736 and then sat until 1742 and then walked upslope to a nest that he used three weeks ago. He looked up at the nest for some three minutes before he bit off three branches of soft leaves and carried the leaves up in the tree to refurbish his nest. He made the nest with these leaves and others; the nest was his old one that he used on the night of Day 18.
