Day 35: Mike Steals Bird from Baboons — Evered Returns

David’s Report. Quite an exciting day! Upon un-nesting around 0700, Melissa, Fifi, Figan, Freud, Goblin, and Patti went north to a mumanda tree and met Nope, Mustard, Athena, and Atlas. Figan soon left by himself and headed to the beach for ngazi, but A-troop baboons were there, and he decided to leave. He returned to Kasakela where he saw Gigi and Pallas and then I lost him from 0805 to 0840 when I re-found him outside of Camp to the northwest. He arrived in Camp and soon left to the east where he fed on ngazi and muguiza. He fed nonstop until 1200 alone, with brief visits by Athena, Atlas, and Pallas. He returned to Camp at 1223 where he met Jomeo and Miff. Gilka, Faben, and Goblin later join them. At 1423 they heard vocalizations by Camp Troop baboons to the southwest and hurriedly left Camp.

At KK0 they met Melissa, Gilka, Mike, and Fifi, and they followed a baboon. Mike stole from the baboon a part of a bird that it had killed. The next 20 minutes there were many incidents of baboon-chimp aggression. Goblin was attacked by the adult male possessor of the carcass and then Figan attacked Goblin out of frustration (see Predation Reports). The group dissolved and Figan moved east again and fed on ngazi and vines. Later he arrived to see Faben, Humphrey, and Gilka. Faben left, and Humphrey and Gilka fed together near the Dell. There were many pant-hoots throughout the afternoon in the valley. The chimps worked themselves up lower KK3 area and by 1800 were feeding on kitota.
Then all hell broke loose as Athena, Atlas, Fifi, Goblin, and Evered arrived. Figan had not seen Evered since July 21 (DAY 22). Figan hair-out with full-open-grin screaming embraced Humphrey, and displayed twice at Evered. Evered very submissive. They all went into a fruit tree of some kind. Shortly, Sherry arrived with Gilka, beating her up. Satan attacked Gigi (contact II). Later, after nearly nesting, Humphrey and Evered decided to go down slope instead of following the others up slope. This prompted a Figan charge downhill. Satan contacted Fifi and then Sherry attacked Fifi (contact II). Figan did five more charging displays downhill and they arrived at the stream (see ASSR section). They nested around 1915 to 1930, with Figan displaying twice more at Evered.

1756 Gigi, Evered, Goblin, and Fifi arrive to where Figan, Humphrey, and Gilka were feeding on kitota. They arrived pant-hooting, and when Evered saw Figan he avoided into a tree pant-grunting. Figan, full-open-grin, screams and hair-out runs 10 m to Humphrey where they embrace hair-out and screaming. Figan then charges. Athena and Atlas arrive.
1800 Figan eats a little kitota for a few minutes with hair-out while Evered sits in a tree 15 m away looking at Figan. Fifi approaches Figan and close-faces. Evered comes down out of the tree and approaches Humphrey and grooms with Humphrey at 5 m from Figan.
1802 Pant-hoots from distance (probably Satan and Sherry) and Evered starts to bob and pant-grunt to Figan, prompting Figan to charge downslope. Bad observation for the next two minutes as the animals climb a big fruit tree (like muguiza, but little leaves like mkuyu). Goblin is screaming nearby: probably attacked by Humphrey or Evered.
1810 Satan and Sherry arrive. Gilka is screaming – just attacked by Sherry (contact II). Sherry attacks Gigi (contact II) who is on the ground. Gigi screams and avoids.
1815 By now all the animals are feeding in the tree (Gigi, Gilka, Sherry, Satan, Fifi, Athena, Atlas, Evered, Figan, and Humphrey). There are many screams from the valley (Faben seen there around 1700).
1837 Figan, Satan, Gigi, Athena, Atlas, Fifi, Goblin, and Sherry leave the tree; Gilka, Evered, and Humphrey remain feeding. After brief play with Freud, Figan is just sitting on the trail waiting for the others to go upslope. Evered and Humphrey descend and go downslope.
1849 Figan charges downslope. Humphrey and Evered avoid into trees. Satan attacks Fifi (contact II). Athena approaches Figan and kisses him.
1856 Goblin screams and Figan charges downslope branch-waving and branch-dragging. All of his displays are silent and involve dragging branches downhill. No response to this one.
1903 Figan charges downslope. Sherry pant-grunts.
1904 Figan hair-out charges downslope. Humphrey avoids screaming. Sherry attacks Fifi (contact II), and Fifi chases Sherry and then Sherry contact II avoids her.
1906 Figan charges downslope. Humphrey and Satan avoid. Evered is hanging back, coming downslope slowly. Figan hits me briefly.
1909 Figan charges downslope. No avoids. They all move downslope and Gigi, Athena, and Sherry nest. Goblin, Humphrey, Evered, and FiFi follow Figan to the stream.
1928 Humphrey and Fifi have made nests. Figan, Goblin, and Evered are on the ground. Figan hair-out charges again. Evered avoids into a tree.
1929 Another Figan charge, and then presumed pant-hooting from all and Figan nests.
After the rest period, Figan charged downslope six times and displayed twice at nesting.
Nesting Detail: Figan nests after a series of two displays at 1930. Goblin and Evered nest with him. Fifi and Humphrey had made nests three minutes before. Gigi and Athena had followed Figan down to the stream. This was at KK3.
