Date:July 16, 1974
Start:07:00 (nest)
Finish:18:45 (nest)
Duration:11 hr. 45 min.
Observers:David Riss and Hilali Matama

David’s Report. The morning started off with an attack on the unhabituated mother-infant that has been seeing frequently lately (see BETA on July 16th on Evered for details) by Figan and Faben. Figan and Faben split off on their own and encountered the mother-infant pair [Harmony and Beethoven] once again and displayed past them. They met up with Gigi, Athena, Sherry, and Jomeo again in Upper Kasakela. Patti, Gigi, Figan, and Faben traveled together east up the Linda slope finding fruits and groomed briefly on top of Bald Soko.

The chimps rushed down (Figan and Faben silently displaying) into the KK6 valley and later met up with Jomeo and Sherry, who soon left to the east. Figan and Faben left Gigi and Patti behind after grooming and traveled to the Kakombe stream to feed on ngazi, muguiza, and another leaf tree. They headed to Camp and were re-joined by Patti en route. They were given bananas, though Figan ended up with the majority due to poor timing on box opening. Patti and Faben begged and there was an encounter with a baboon and a subsequent attack on Patti by Figan and Faben. Atlas groomed Figan for 12 minutes before they left to the north again. This time they stopped to feed on mnazi on the route near Plum Tree.

Athena’s seven-year-old son Atlas sits in camp.

Athena and Patti had a squabble where no contact was observed, but both females were screaming with full-open-grin grins as they descended the mnazi tree following Figan and Faben northward. Very strange as both walked screaming, Patti trailing Athena within 5 m. It quickly settled down, but on arrival at the mnazi tree in Kasakela’s AK1 korongo, Athena once again waah’ed at Patti upon the younger female’s arrival. They nested together in Kasakela.

ASSR Details. The attack on the mother-infant at 0710 described previously. After that Sherry approached Figan pant-grunting, and Faben hair-out chased Sherry for 15 seconds throwing a rock at him. Sherry avoided screaming. Figan and Faben several displays at the stream while traveling up the Linda stream: not streambed displays but drumming displays. Faben later attacked Athena (contact II) upon arrival. Gigi approached Patti and displaced her in some mshai and Patti screamed and avoided.

Patti eats mshai on an upper hillside.

The chimps arrived in Camp and Figan and Faben were given bananas. Figan ate more than Faben, and Faben started to beg with Patti from Figan. Athena and Atlas came into camp; Faben went bipedal and hair-out and Patti avoided screaming.

Then Rock, an old Camp Troop male baboon, came in and Figan and Faben both go bipedal and waah. Faben redirects against Patti (contact II) in the bushes, stamping on her. Figan bipedal with bananas in groin pocket and arms stamps on her and moves to tree. Baboon approaches Figan, and Figan bipedal hair-out threatens by approaching. Figan goes up in tree. Patti later joins and full-closed-grin, whimper/squeak/scream tries to beg hand-to-mouth, and hand-to-hand: all unsuccessful. As Figan and Faben left an mnazi tree later, Athena and Patti followed. For some reason, both started to scream and waah at each other with full-open-grins. No contact was seen, but perhaps coming out of the tree something happened. Both screamed as they followed Figan and Faben for another minute.

Nesting Details. Feeds on mnazi beginning at 1813 in Kasakela. Atlas makes nest at 1835. At 1836, Figan/Faben fast grunts. Faben descends tree, moves to greater than 15 m and makes nest. Figan food-grunts. Figan climbs to old nest (he had made it on Day 9) and breaks a few branches and nests. 1848: Athena nests … 1851: Patti nests.
