Predation Report — Unsuccessful Colobus Hunts
Three Unsuccessful Colobus Hunts

Day 6: Figan encountered with Jomeo the same troop twice, two hours apart: the first time in KK4 and the next time in KK5. Just starting to feed on budyankende, heading south or up the slope, he came across suddenly a colobus troop and charged into a tree which contained several individuals.
He sat for 5 minutes in the tree watching the monkeys: the monkeys became very loud. There was bad observation as to the number of males, etc. and how many avoided in the tree upon Figan’s arrival. Jomeo sat on the ground for the 5 minute period.

Figan, with his hair out after the initial charge, descended the tree and left the troop and began budyankende feeding again. Two hours later he had begun a northward traveling budyankende feeding into KK4–KK5 ridge. He was not traveling much and would find large pockets of the fruit on the ground and would try to get most of the fruit. He had been feeding some 15 minutes when he came across the troop again (it probably was deliberate, as he had listened for 30 secs on top of KK4 before going in that direction, though there were many vocalizations in the lower valleys, and perhaps he wanted to get down via KK5 budyankende-kitota path).
He spent the first 4 minutes traveling on the ground, back and forth, looking up at the individuals with his hair out. The troop seemed to be moving slowly, perhaps feeding. It was scattered. Figan charged after one individual but the individual escaped into another tree.
Figan immediately descended and traveled rapidly back to where he began the charge (a good cutoff, ambush route?). Jomeo appeared out of nowhere (we had not seen him since we left Hilltop Wood at 1404). Jomeo then left (he probably was hunting, but I never saw him again).
Figan then charged in an opposite direction and up a tree overlooking KK5 and came within 10 meters of a juvenile-sized individual before the individual leaped fantastically into a lower tree. This was too much for Figan as he doubled back in the tree and tree-leaped to a safer and closer limb and descended to the ground and charged down the korongo.
The troop seemed to be shifting their direction from east to north, down the korongo. Lots of monkey vocalizations. Figan crashed through the thick vegetation and I lost him for 10 minutes. When I found him, he was beginning budyankende feeding, which continued in the same area for 30 minutes with some monkeys very near by. The hunt had lasted for 20 minutes.

Day 30: Later this same day Figan “stumbles” upon a colobus troop during travel to ngazi trees at the base of Dung Hill.

Charlie and Willy Wally watch colobus monkeys during a prolonged unsuccessful hunt by the Kahama community chimps on August 26, 1974.
- 1345. During lone travel on the main path to the waterfall, Figan comes across a colobus troop. Colobus alarm calls are heard as Figan sits on the ground and watches.
- 1346. Distant pant-hoots from near Camp.
- 1348. Figan travels uphill, sits under the colobus monkeys and watches.
- 1354. Figan moves further uphill and watches the monkeys who are avoiding.
- 1359. Many distant pant-hoots, screams, waah’s etc. from the Camp area — perhaps still in response to Bolivar the Bushpig. Figan looks.
- 1405. More waah’s, eagle-wraah’s, and screams from the Camp area. A colobus monkey leaps above, causing Figan to run several meters along the ground.
- 1407. Figan climbs into a tree where there are several colobus monkeys. Figan then rushes up the tree with hair-out and an adult male colobus monkey avoids.
- 1408. Figan chases a small monkey who avoided past Figan; Figan jumps down after the monkey and comes within 2 m of catching it.
- 1410. Figan changes trees and climbs 15 m higher. A monkey avoids and Figan chases it unsuccessfully as a branch breaks. Figan came no closer than 7 meters.
- 1411. Figan climbs higher in the tree then descends to the ground. Monkeys avoid in another tall tree above; Figan get excited, puts hair-out, and rushes down towards the tree. Figan climbs up this tall (30 m) tree then sits as all the monkeys (about 3) avoid successfully.
- 1422. Figan descends to the ground and does two drumming displays (possible tension release?) Figan travels towards Camp.
Later in the day at 1503 Figan passes up this same troop during travel to the waterfall. Figan watches them briefly then travels on.

Day 41: The following is an account of a brief unsuccessful predation attempt on colobus monkeys by Humphrey, Figan, and Faben in KK3.
- 1558. Figan led travel into upper KK3 from the lower kitota patches. A colobus troop was seen above as we entered the flat KK3 basin and Figan, Faben, and Humphrey all immediately put hair-out and looked at the avoiding monkeys.

Madam Bee and Little Bee (climbing) watch colobus monkeys during a prolonged unsuccessful hunt by the Kahama community chimps on August 26, 1974.
- 1559. Humphrey full-open-grin holds Faben’s balls for five seconds.
- 1600. There are many alarm calls and much movement by the monkeys.
- 1605. Figan, Faben, and Humphrey continue to sit and watch. Faben and Humphrey seem to be waiting for Figan to act. Figan travels uphill; Faben and Humphrey follow. Monkeys continue to leap above.
- 1610. Figan, Faben, and Humphrey all do pant-hoot-drum displays; distant pant-hoots in response. Figan has hair half out as he moves uphill towards the main part of the troop.
- 1613. Figan rushes up a tall tree and monkeys avoid out of this and nearby trees. Figan climbs up 25 m and sits.
- 1615. Figan descends the tree a ways.
- 1617. Sparrow arrives and pant-bobs loudly to Humphrey or Faben in the distance. Faben and Humphrey have not been seen in the trees yet. Figan is still sitting 20 m up in a tree; Sparrow screams and possibly is being attacked. Figan rushes at several colobus monkeys then retreats as an adult male monkey threatens him. Figan never came within 10 m of catching a monkey.
- 1619. Figan still sits very high up in a miombo tree near monkeys. Faben, Humphrey, and Sparrow are still on the ground in the distance.
- 1620. Sparrow pant-bobs and screams nearby.
- 1621. Figan descends to the ground, giving up the predation attempt.
The chimps then travel 30 m near the Meat Ridge path and feed on muhasha for the next 3 hours before nesting. During these three hours there are always colobus monkeys within 40 m.
One adult male sat 20 m from the chimps and displayed at them for a long time. The chimps nested right over the KK3 korongo. It was completely dark (no moon) as the chimps nested, but I am certain that there were colobus monkeys within 100 m.
