Day 24: Figan Eats Cardboard—Patti Begs
| Date: | July 23, 1974 |
| Start: | 07:12 (nest) |
| Finish: | 19:16 (nest) |
| Duration: | 12 hr. 4 min. |
| Observers: | Curt Busse and Hamisi Mkono |
Curt’s Report. Figan was out of his nest at 0712 and he waited 20 minutes for Faben to un-nest before feeding on nearby msongati for an hour. Figan and Faben then made a B-line for Camp. They displayed at Peak Ridge, but surprisingly did nothing as they passed the Plum Tree Thicket drum. Nope and Mustard had been passed during travel through AK2. Hugo and Mike were in Camp; Figan groomed for several minutes with Mike. During grooming there were waah’s from KK1. Mike and Figan both went bipedal with hair-out and waah’ed twice as they looked towards KK1 (perhaps Jomeo or Sherry). A minute later there were more distant waah’s. Figan and Mike put hair-out and Hugo waah’ed in response. Faben had already left Camp to the east. Figan and Mike displayed together in Camp, then Figan joined Hugo in an ngazi tree at the border of Camp.

Sherry, who had probably been responsible for the earlier waah’s from KK1, arrived and Mike pant-grunted to Sherry. This is the first time that Mike has been observed to be submissive to Sherry. Figan fed for ½ hr, then joined Mike and Sherry for a big resting session. Figan eventually left the group and traveled to the muguiza tree near the Mess, displaying once during travel. Patti joined Figan and they traveled past the kitchen and darkroom towards staff Camp. Patti showed surprisingly little apprehension during travel near the Mess.
Figan found a large piece of cardboard near Staff Camp, and traveled upstream with it before settling down to ½ hour of hearty chewing. Patti begged several times and was almost always successful for pieces of cardboard.

Figan drummed on the way to Camp and upon arrival at Camp where he met Sherry and Winkle (no ASR). Figan left Camp and headed for the KK6-KK7 muguiza tree. During travel at KK9, Figan drum-displayed; there were responses from Faben and others 200 m away, but Figan ignored them. Figan also fed on kitota and ngazi before passing through KK7 to Rocky Peak for mshai. Figan then hit the Upper Kasakela kifumbe tree for an hour.
At 1727 Figan traveled through Upper Kasakela to the Kasakela waterfall where he met Gigi. Figan had put his hair out twice during travel after sniffing branches. Figan had lost Gigi yesterday morning, however now she was no longer fully swollen.

After brief feeding at the waterfall, Gigi traveled into Upper Kasakela. Figan followed her briefly then returned and traveled down the waterfall losing us hopelessly. We found Figan an hour later at 1902, feeding alone on mnazi near Peak Ridge in Kasakela. Figan continued feeding for 15 minutes before nesting.

ASR Details. The major ASR of the day came as Sherry arrived in Camp and Mike pant-grunted to Sherry. This was the first submission by Mike following the recent attack by Sherry on Mike.
Nesting Details. Figan had been feeding alone in an mnazi tree near Peak Ridge in Kasakela when at 1916 he went into an old nest a few meters from his last feed.
