Day 12: Chimps Visit Jane’s House
| Date: | July 11, 1974 |
| Start: | 06:39 (nest) |
| Finish: | 18:10 (nest) |
| Duration: | 11 hr. 31 min. |
| Observers: | Curt Busse and Esilom Mpongo |
Curt’s Report. Gigi (B=1) was first out of the nest at 0639 and Figan followed with a branching display directed at Gigi. Goblin, Faben, and Patti joined them and the group traveled to the Lower Kasakela mnazi trees near the beach. Figan and Faben did arrival displays. Sherry pant-bobbed and waah’ed. Fifi and Freud arrived during msongati feeding. Freud went ventral on Figan and touched Figan’s balls.
The group stopped by Jane’s house for mumanda before traveling to Camp. Figan and Faben did arrival displays; Athena and Atlas watched and later were submissive to Figan. Atlas for several minutes courted Gigi by standing bipedal next to her, displaying an erect penis and whimpering. Through several bouts of this Gigi presented for mounting twice.

Faben follows Gigi (B=1) during travel toward “The Cage” (chain-link enclosure) on their way to the mumanda tree behind Jane’s house (Day 12, 15:05). Goblin climbs the wall (right). Atlas is in the balcony.
During the late 1960s and early 1970s, young Grub often stayed in the cage, protected from the potentially aggressive chimpanzees. Curt spent his first night at Gombe in the Cage. ![]()
Figan led travel out of Camp towards KK0 where vocalizations had been heard earlier. This apparent search for chimps was fruitless and Figan lost Faben in the process. Figan traveled back to Camp, stopped on the south border of Camp, looked and grunted twice before traveling back down towards the Mess. Figan, apparently by grunting at the border of Camp, had ascertained that Faben wasn’t there. Figan found the group – Faben, Goblin, Athena, Atlas, Gigi, Gilka, and Patti – near Palm Grove.
The group fed briefly on muguiza, masagoro, and matete near the Mess and then traveled to Jane’s house for some mumanda. Hugo was present and submissive to Figan at the mumanda tree. Long bouts of msongati and mnazi by this large group preceded brief kitota feeding then nesting in Lower Kasakela. There were several rounds of pant-hoots at the mnazi trees. Figan, Faben, Hugo, Mike, Gilka, Goblin, and Gigi all nested very close together, with Athena, Atlas, Patti, Miff, and Moeza in the distance.

Hugo eats kitota (“chimp spinach”). ![]()
ASR Details. No major ASR today. Figan displayed at Gigi upon un-nesting, and later Figan and Faben displayed upon arrival at mnazi trees where Sherry was feeding.
Nesting Details. Mike, Gigi, and Gilka are seen nested as Figan and others continued to feed on kitota in Lower Kasakela. At 1806 Figan and Faben moved down and sat under the trees where the others had nested. Figan grunted and soon afterwards Faben climbed in a tree and built a nest a few meters from Mike. Earlier there had been two rapid-grunts by Figan as he fed on kitota. At 1810 Figan built his nest 5 m from Faben and 3 m from Mike. They were all less than 10 m off the ground. There were two rounds of pant-hoots by the group. Figan rapid-grunted and Mike grunted in response.

At 1819 Hugo went in the tree and built his nest next to Mike. Athena and Atlas built their nests 30 m away over the Kasakela stream. Goblin was the only chimp not nested when we left. Figan was within 5 m of Faben, Mike, Hugo, Gigi, and Gilka. At 1826 the group responded to nearby vocalizations (Miff?) with many waah’s and pant-hoots. The group was noisy for several minutes before settling down. Next morning Faben had changed nests and we never saw Figan in his nest.
