Day 7: Slow Day, Rained Out

Date:July 6, 1974
Start:07:30
Finish:13:30 (rained out)
Duration:6 hr. 0 min.
Observers:David Riss and Juma Mkukwe

David’s Report. Figan was found early feeding on msongati with Jomeo and Gilka after he had left his nest. There were a series of pant-hoot exchanges between Figan and Jomeo and chimps near The Peak. Figan and Jomeo then headed up there, with a couple of displays on the way. He arrived to find Humphrey, Satan, Evered, and Faben, who he had not seen since Day 4. He displayed twice, with Humphrey especially submissive, and Evered ignoring the second branching display, with bad observer observation on Evered’s initial reaction to Figan.

Evered sits in camp.

Figan and Faben followed Jomeo to Rocky Peak and left Jomeo (or vice versa) in heavy rain. The drizzles lasted for three hours before the follow was terminated. Figan and Faben ate mshai from O815 to 1245 before they traveled into KK6.

ASSR Details. An arrival display when he meets Faben, Evered, Humphrey, and Satan. Impressive branch-dragging and confidence as he charges before and under these males’ trees. Poor observation of others’ response but Faben no response and Humphrey bobbing pant-grunt submissively. For the second display past the group, Evered showed no reaction. Not the overtly submissive behavior shown in previous follows.

Nesting Details. No nesting as rain terminated the follow at 1330.
