Predation Report — Day 45
Humphrey Steals Meat from Gilka
| Date: | August 13, 1974 |
| Observers: | David Riss and Petro Leo |
At 1815, Figan, Evered, Satan, Humphrey, Mike, and Patti traveled up the south side of Lower Mkenke Valley. All stopped, looking east, possibly waiting for vocalizations or just listening.
They were about to move south again when they heard something that made them all go insane. All waah’ed and ran down into the valley pant-hooting. Figan displayed with hair out. They crossed the stream and charged to the base of a very large tree where they all sat. Satan looked up with hair-out for about five minutes without climbing the tree. He was frantic sometimes.
Evered, Figan, Patti, and Humphrey just sat there and Mike had climbed 10 m up into the tree and just sat there. After some five minutes Mike and Humphrey started up into the tree, and there was Gilka.
There was bad observation as high up in the tree there were food-grunts by Mike and Humphrey. I did not know how, but suddenly Humphrey had a piece of meat larger than his fist, which he was guarding against a persistent Mike.
No Gilka screams or sounds of a fight; it was like Gilka just handed him a piece of meat. At the same time, a huge fish eagle bird flew out of the tree. Coincidence? I do not know. There were no feathers on the meat, and it looks like meat from an animal.
Humphrey and Mike approached to a few meters of Figan low in the tree, and I had a good look at the piece: seemed like a small animal with a backbone. Figan showed no interest, nor did Evered nor Satan. Gilka stayed around a bit, but returned to the ground where Evered and Satan sat.
Mike for the next hour begged high up in the tree from Humphrey. Bad observation on begging in the dusk and in the high tree after they returned there. Figan slept and rested low in the tree; Patti fed nearby, and Satan, Gilka, and Evered rested on the ground. Finally, at 1950 Humphrey came down meatless and made a small nest, which prompted others to do so also.
Summary
We arrived mysteriously to find Gilka with some kind of meat, which was taken from her by Humphrey. She must have already killed it as it was meat, not an animal that had just been killed.
The animals after hearing Gilka somehow rushed down to the tree, but probably could not find her. Gilka made a noise, and Humphrey went up and got the meat from her, avoiding a fight. Evered, Patti, Gilka, and Figan paid little attention and waited until Mike and Humphrey had finished the meat before nesting.
