Habitat and Wildlife

Here are a few random photos of Gombe habitat and wildlife.

Buttressed tree in Mkenke valley.

Thorns.

The chimps sometimes drummed against these buttresses along the trail near the top of KK1.

Bolivar the Bushpig was a quiet old individual. He/she passed away near Chimp Camp around Day 30.

David and Curt were delighted one day to discover that Saidi had hacked this new path (albeit slanted) in lower Kasakela valley, parts of which were almost impenetrable. The chimps also used this new trail.

Figan was not happy to see this snake, possibly a green mamba, with its head raised while blocking the trail to the waterfall. He stopped fifteen feet from the snake, hoo’ed briefly, then climbed ten feet up a tree and waited for five minutes until the snake moved off.

Monitior lizard.

Sunset over Lake Tanganyika during the winter, dry season. During the wet season, the mountains of Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) were often visible 35 miles across the lake.
