Kasakela Males
Hugo
Hugo (age 38, formerly Rodolf) was a quiet old guy who spent a lot of time grooming and feeding. He was the fourth adult male to visit Dr. Jane’s camp in the early 1960s. In their first encounter, the startled Hugo threatened Jane and hurled a stone at her.

Mike
Mike (age 36) was famous for incorporating empty kerosene cans into his aggressive displays. He bluffed his way to alpha status in 1964 and maintained the top rank for seven years until Humphrey took over in 1971. Afterwards, Mike dropped quickly in rank but remained relentless at obtaining meat at kills.

Humphrey
Humphrey (age 30) was a large, brutish male famous for throwing rocks at human observers. He was alpha male for 20 months during 1971 and 1972, during the period of community fission. He ranked behind Figan and Evered during the Figan Follow.

Faben
Faben (age 27) lost the use of his right arm during the 1966 polio epidemic and often walked bipedal. He maintained high social rank via his alliance with his younger brother Figan.

Evered
Evered (age 22) was the powerful beta male (#2) who challenged Figan but could never overcome the strong Figan/Faben alliance. He became increasingly peripheral following Figan’s rise to power in 1973.

Figan
Figan (age 21) appears in many of the early photos with Jane, who considered him to be the most clever and intelligent of the chimps. With the help of his older brother Faben, he rose to alpha rank in 1973 and achieved worldwide fame as the protagonist of The Figan Follow.

Satan
Satan (age 19) was a large, prime male who was known for his spectacular waterfall and streambed displays. He got his name in 1964 for stealing part of a manuscript that Jane’s mother Vanne was writing.

Jomeo
Jomeo (age 18) was a large, prime male who never became high-ranking. Like his brother Sherry, he was a fierce combatant during inter-community conflicts.

Sherry
Sherry (age 13) was a young adult male who was rising in rank and had a close relationship with his brother Jomeo. He was a fierce combatant during inter-community conflicts and was the primary aggressor during the violent attack on Kahama male Dé.

Sherry stands bipedal with his hair erect, rocks from side to side, and begins pant-hooting prior to pounding on the 55-gallon drum in front of Pan Palace.
Goblin
Melissa’s ten-year-old son Goblin appeared to idolize Figan and associated with him often. He was with Figan during 35% of the Figan Follow, more than anyone else except for Faben and Gigi. Years later he would take over the alpha rank from Figan.
